How to Upgrade Your Memory (RAM) on a Laptop

If your older laptop is getting sluggish with time or the new system is choking up because of too many open tabs, adding more RAM can help you solve this problem. When a computer does not have the required physical memory to run something, it starts to swap data that goes to your SSD or hard drive. This makes your computer slower than the slowest chip RAM.

Not all laptops give access to RAM; however, many do provide you with a simple way to upgrade the memory. If you can do this, the laptop RAM upgrade won’t cost you much. Typically, upgrading from 4GB to 8GB costs around $25 to $55. This price range depends on whether you are buying a complete 8GB RAM or just adding 4GB of RAM to your PC. As for the time, swapping RAM chips take a maximum of 10 minutes.

Below are the steps on how to upgrade your RAM:

Step #1

Check Your RAM Usage

One of the reasons behind stability problems and slow performance is low memory caused by bottlenecks on your computer. If you are a multitasker or keep 30 tabs open on your browser, adding more memory to your system will allow it to run smoothly.

Open Window Task Manager on your laptop to check your memory usage.

·       Taskbar (Right Click) > Task Manager > Performance Tab > Total Memory Available

You will then see how much physical memory is used and how much is available.

For a detailed view, click “Open Resource Monitor,” followed by a click on the Memory tab.

Find Out If an Upgrade Is Possible

Many laptops have a sealed bottom, which makes it difficult to change the RAM physically. In some cases, RAM is soldered to the motherboard. Lastly, sometimes the system does not recognize the memory left in the laptop, and you could be using the last bit of it.

Try Crucial’s Memory Advisor Tool to see if your laptop needs an upgrade or not. After entering in the laptop’s model and brand, you will get the results that will tell you how much memory your laptop has the slots available.

Step #3

Locate Your Laptop’s Memory Banks

Now that you know the requirements for your laptop RAM upgrade, the remaining process is pretty straightforward. First, shut down your laptop and then unplug the adapter.

Open the panel underneath your laptop that covers the memory banks. Before touching any components, make sure there’s no electrical discharge that can shock you. You can ground yourself by touching any of part the metal surface. For example, the metal connector or the hard drive.

Remove Memory

If all the memory slots are full, you will have to remove the existing DIMMs. To replace the memory module, release the clips holding it. The memory module will pop right up. Make sure you don’t touch the gold connectors when lifting it.

Step #5

Install the New Module

Once you have removed the old memory module, insert the new one at a 45° angle. The gold edges should be facing down. Use your fingers to push in the modules gently and make sure it is flat and level. 

That’s it! You can now turn on your laptop and verify the memory by clicking on the Task Manager tab again.
